Im Bereich der nachhaltigen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie (Green IT) steht die Energieeinsparung an erster Stelle, die meist mit dem Blauen Engel belohnt wird. Dieser trifft jedoch keine Aussage über das verbaute Material und den mit der Produktion einhergehenden Energieaufwand. Ressourcenschonung meint hier folglich meist Energieeffizienz.

Einige Firmen setzen recycelte Kunststoffe für die Gehäuse ein. Wenige – namhafte – Hersteller haben sich bisher an die Materialeigenschaft "nachwachsender Rohstoff" gewagt. Aus diesem Grunde steht z.B. auch nur der Prototyp eines Telefongehäuses aus Biokunststoff zur Verfügung.

Das Biopolymernetzwerk der FNR und wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen wie das Institut für Biokunststoffe und Bioverbundwerkstoffe (IfBB) unterstützen interessierte Unternehmen bei der Materialauswahl und –optimierung.

Es gibt aber auch – kleine - Firmen in diesem Segment, die sich großes vorgenommen haben und nicht nur Umweltaspekte bei ihrer Produktgestaltung, sondern auch soziale und faire Arbeitsbedingungen berücksichtigen. Zu nennen ist hier die "Faire Maus", die die Frage nach dem Preis nicht nur mit der Abkehr von petrochemischen Rohstoffen, sondern mit einer transparenten Lieferkette und einem ausgeklügelten Entsorgungssystem beantwortet.

The iameco v.3 touch screen computer has a carbon footprint that is 70% less than the average PC. Less than 360 kilograms CO2eq is produced over the full product life cycle. Developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute Berlin, the University of Limerick and a network of eco-friendly suppliers across Europe, iameco is the first computer of its kind to win the prestigious EU Eco Flower certification, the most comprehensive environmental standard.

Almost all of the materials used in the computer are recyclable, including the wooden frame. Hazardous materials typically used in a computer manufacturing process have been reduced to a minimum for iameco and replaced with environmentally friendly alternatives. Conventional lighting has been replaced with LED lighting, which is 30-40pc more energy efficient, and the energy required to cool the PC is cut down by switching out the traditional fans for copper tubing and heat sinks.

The device also uses standard computer components to ensure it can be updated, maintained and repaired easily. Over time you can continuously upgrade your system to the latest technology for half the cost of purchasing a new device.

And in addition to its environmental credentials, the iameco computer is beautiful.

Oekologische Eigenschaften

We adopted five Design For Re-use waste prevention strategies when developing our computers:

  • Design for minimised production waste
  • Design for lifetime extension/reuse (DfLE)
  • Design for repair and upgradability/Design for refurbishment
  • Design for disassembly (DfD) and
  • Design for collection

And we set ourselves these goals:

  • achieve a decrease of at least 30% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to normal laptop production
  • achieve at least 70% of overall re-use and recycling of waste while producing the laptop
  • achieve a reduction of at least 75% of fresh water utilisation compared to normal laptop production.

Extensive scientific testing has been carried out by research partners on both iameco models.  The Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Limerick evaluated the iameco v3 for Energy Star 5 compliance. The Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin carried out a streamlined Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) and then Tricom, a specialist computer reuse enterprise in Berlin carried out a Disassembly evaluation. Both the Fraunhofer and Tricom reports were integrated into a final Eco Design report prepared by the University of Limerick.

Both the iameco v3 and the D4R laptop boast energy efficiency that meets the toughest European benchmarks, The iameco v3 desktop, for example, is 45% more energy efficient that the average laptop. For this and other reasons it has been awarded the European Eco-Label.

Global Warming Potential in both models is comparatively low, mainly due to the carbon positive nature of the wooden housing. The D4R laptop, for example, has been estimated to embody 61% less CO2 emissions than an equivalent laptop computer. This is good news for the environment.

Perhaps the most significant recent development has been iameco’s work with the ZeroWIN project, a European project aimed at "Zero Waste in Industrial Networks”.  As part of that project we have been organizing sources of supply for reusable and recycled components and also destinations for iameco components when they reach end of life.  Achieving a zero waste production process requires a paradigm shift in how companies plan and manage their sourcing, distribution and production. The new iameco D4R laptop is proof that it is possible with a little ingenuity to significantly reduce the environmental impact for electronic equipment production.

iameco computers are designed with sustainability as our central goal.  We have analysed and deconstructed traditional computer design and rebuilt it from scratch, reflecting the principles of the cradle-to-cradle approach, where no waste is generated, and materials and components are reusable and recyclable.

Obsolescence has been designed out of the computers, making then easily disassembled and upgraded. This means that parts can be upgraded or replaced without time, cost or effort.  With a durable wooden shell and easily upgradable and replaceable parts and components, the iameco computers can always remain state-of-the-art, and never become unwanted or obsolete.

iameco computers are designed with sustainability as our central focus.  We want to reduce or eliminate waste and encourage reuse and recycling of materials and components.

In order to make this upgrading and replacement model of sustainability work, we offer a repair, upgrading, and replacement and take back service for all computers sold. This means that the process of keeping the iameco up to date is straightforward and affordable. At the moment this service is provided directly by MicroPro in Dublin and we will soon be adding service agencies in Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom.
